Chitharathai (சித்தரத்தை) is a traditional medicine used as an home remedy for cough, cold, sore throat, chest congestion and arthritis. This is used in Naturopathy, Siddha, Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, folk medicine, etc. Alpina galanga belongs to zingiberaceae family. It is called as 'Kulanjan' in Hindi, 'Chitharatha' in Malayalam, 'Chitharathai' in Tamil and 'Dumparaashtrakamu' in Telugu.

It is native to India. It has a narrow foliage and stems with dull dark green leaves, white and red fragrant flowers. This rhizome (underground stem) grows narrowly oblong and much branched in the soil.

This is rich in iron, sodium, vitamin A and vitamin C, flavonoids, phytonutrients, emodin, beta sitosterol, galangin and quercetin.

Chitharathai has anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-ulcer, anti-diarrhea, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-microbial properties. Its anti-inflammatory property makes it very effective in treating arthritis. This rhizome (dried) and its powder will be available in herbal stores.

Directions to use:
  • Add 2 to 3 gms of Chitharathai powder with honey or milk and drink this mixture for 3 days to relieve from cough and common cold.
  • Make decoction with Chitharathaiand add some honey to it. To make this decoction, boil and strain 5 gms of Chitharathai powder in 1 glass of water.
  • Chew a small piece of Chitharathai to relieve from cough.
  • Make paste out of Chitharathai powder and apply on the knee to reduce knee inflammation and relieve from knee pain.
